This was a blast to photograph! These couple promised to be with each other for better or worse with all their friends and family and without the paper to certify it. Yes, they had a commitment ceremony at their hometown of Oakland, CA. They were both in tears and so was I. It was also a little hard to photograph because it was at the middle of the day – well sort of and I also wasn’t trying to be so intrusive. I sometimes see videos of photographers that are “in your face type”. They get really close to you during exchange of rings or during the kiss. It’s horrible. I believe that weddings is all about the couple and the photographer is just there to record the day of the event. To be like a fly on the wall.
During couple and group photos, that’s a different story. You become the director and making sure that everybody looks their best. Getting all the shots that the bride wants, but also keeping track of the time and making sure that the bride and groom have some minutes to recoup and be alone before the reception time.
As the couple are getting ready for the reception, as the photographer this is a great time to make sure that all your gear still have enough juice. If it does not, change batteries, check your SD cards or swap them. Make sure your lights are working and also have your assistant be ready for on the fly instructions. I have used the Voxer app. It is a walkie has a walkie talkie mode. It was great at the beginning, but as the music started, it became hard to hear each other. I also tried using regular walkie-talkies and those can be obtrusive and bulky. I know there are better ones out there now, but I figured we have our phones with us all the time, why not use that instead? Save on money and be productive, right?
Usually I am the last one out. I make sure all my gear come back and I have not forgotten anything. Well, I have forgotten my ladder in the past (I use a ladder because I am short) but other than that, I have everything. Everything that I own is labeled and if I have more than one of something, that gets labeled 1 of x. It works for me and helps me keep track of everything, especially at the end of the night when every one just want to go home.
When I get back from a wedding, and I still have the strength, I upload all my images to my hard drive. I don’t delete anything from the SD cards until I have delivered the final products.
